Postworkers' union to discuss strike option
18/03/2004 - 08:55:18The leadership of the Communications Workers Union is due to meet tomorrow to discuss the possibility of calling a national postal strike.
The union’s membership has already voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action over the company’s failure to implement a number of pay and reward deals and the Government’s failure to implement an employee share ownership scheme for An Post staff.
The workers are also angry at An Post’s decision not to pay a 3% pay rise due under the Sustaining Progress agreement.
The company has claimed it cannot afford to pay the increase until its employees sign up to a drastic cost-cutting plan.
Reports this morning said CWU officials were pessimistic about the possibility of averting an all-out strike.
