Cuffe sceptical of Govt action on property proposals

18/03/2004 - 12:12:39
Green Party TD Ciaran Cuffe, a member an Oireachtas committee behind proposals to use taxes and development levies to help the State recoup some of the profits made by property speculators whose land is rezoned, has expressed scepticism about the prospects of the Government implementing the proposals.

He said similar proposals were put forward following a review in 1973, but were ignored by those in government at the time.

"The Kenny Report back in the early 70s made some great proposals, but they weren’t acted on and we’re concerned that exactly the same thing will happen again," Mr Cuffe said.

"So far, I haven’t seen any indication that the Government will move on this report rather than simply just publish it."
