IMC may produce first report ahead of schedule next month

Sources close to last night’s talks between the Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister have revealed that the Independent Monitoring Commission may produce its first report next month.

The Irish and British governments asked the commission to compile a report on ongoing paramilitarism in the North following the Provisional IRA’s alleged involvement in an abduction attempt in Belfast three weeks ago.

That report was due to be published in May, but sources said yesterday that it could be published next month.

Earlier this week, the IMC revealed that it was considering compiling an ad hoc report specifically dealing with the Belfast abduction attempt.
