US suspends French meat imports

24/02/2004 - 21:05:21
The United States is suspending imports of French meat such as cold cuts and foie gras because of food safety concerns, France’s Agriculture Ministry said tonight.

In a statement, the ministry said US veterinary experts who inspected sites in France said they did not conform to US food safety requirements.

It did not give further details or provide any other examples of what meats would fall under the measure.

The statement said a high-level mission from the Agriculture Ministry, along with French veterinary officials, went to Washington yesterday to explain what France has done over the past several months to respond to the “specific requirements” of the US system.

The statement did not elaborate.
