European Commission bans US live bird and egg imports
24/02/2004 - 12:20:43The European Commission has announced that it has ordered the immediate ban of imports into the EU of live birds and eggs from the US after an outbreak of bird flu in Texas.
Commission spokesman Reijo Kemppinen said the commission was informed late last night of the outbreak in the western state.
Texas is the fourth US state to be hit with the virus after Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Kemppinen said: "The commission will therefore take immediate action and suspend the import of live birds and eggs from all of the United States".
