UCD 2-16, Kilkenny 0-5

Slick UCD gave All-Ireland chamions Kilkenny an amazing lesson in hurling at Nowlan Park to cliaim their first ever Walsh Cup title in some style.

With more than a hint of swagger UCD simply outgunned, outscored and outmanouevered an admittedly, second string, Cats outfit.

Inter-county stars Brendan Murphy, Offaly, and Redmond Barry, Wexford, were the chief providers for the college outfit with 1-8 between them in windy conditions.

Poor Kilkenny only managed 0-5 for the whole 70 minutes, and them scored by senior star Jimmy Coogan, with four from frees.

In turn UCD couldn't put a foot wrong and a 15th minute goal from John O'Connor put them into a 1-2 lead that would stretch to a 1-11 to 0-3 advantage by the interval.

It was game over at that point but with Barry, Colm Ryan and Brian Phelan all getting on the act in the second-half they extended their lead further.

Murphy's 42 minute net buster was the pick of the scores after the break and left Kilkenny more than a little ashen faced.

UCD: B Murphy 1-2; R Barry 0-5 (3f); J O'Connor 1-1; C Ryan 0-3 (3f); B Phelan 0-2; S Lucey, D Walton, A Barry 0-1 each.

Kilkenny: J Coogan (0-5; 4f)

Referee: B Gavin (Offaly).
