Taoiseach defends Gardaí after 'abuse of power' claims
09/01/2004 - 12:11:58The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has defended the Gardaí following a television documentary last night detailing incidences of brutality and perjury by members of the Force.
The documentary also suggested that the Gardaí were extremely reluctant to properly investigate cases where their members were suspected of assaulting prisoners and lying under oath.
Mr Ahern said today that he had not seen the programme, but had full confidence in the complaints procedure within the Gardaí.
"Whenever I ever made a complaint about anything brought to me by a constituent, it was properly and fully examined by the Gardaí," he said.
"I have confidence in the system that operates because I have personal experience of it many times in my political career."
