ICCL calls for Garda Ombudsman

09/01/2004 - 07:33:39
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties has called for the establishment of a truly independent garda ombudsman to investigate complaints against the force.

The call follows a television documentary last night that outlined a litany of shocking allegations against the gardaí.

The documentary interviewed several people who claimed to have been assaulted by members of the Force and a judge who said he believed certain gardaí had perjured themselves in his court.

The Garda Síochána has rejected allegations in the programme that discipline within the Force had broken down.

Garda spokesman John Farrelly insisted that all allegations against the force were investigated.

"Since 1996, we have dismissed or caused to be dismissed 26 members of An Garda Síochána who went outside the rules, who broke the rules and were proven to do so," he said.
