Terrorism top of the list at Mediterranean summit
05/12/2003 - 08:58:12Terrorism and illegal immigration was topping the agenda today when southern European and North African leaders were meeting in Tunisia for a summit to bridge the two sides of the Mediterranean.
For the European leaders, the meeting offers a chance to show they have not forgotten their Muslim neighbours to the south – Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia – as the European Union expands to take in 10 new members, including many former Communist countries to the east.
Heads of state from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Malta were expected at the informal two-day meeting in Tunis, dubbed the “five plus five” grouping.
