Vogts plans World Cup bonuses

05/12/2003 - 10:01:24
Scotland manager Berti Vogts has told his players they will receive huge bonus payments for reaching the 2006 World Cup finals.

But if they fail to make it to Germany they will get precisely nothing.

Vogts is in Frankfurt for today’s World Cup qualifying draw – and his dream group would see the Scots paired with Turkey, Belgium, Latvia, Macedonia plus no-hopers Liechtenstein and Andorra.

The Scots have been placed in pot three for the first time, so qualification has been made harder than ever.

But Vogts revealed a financial incentive has been dangled in front of the players.

He said: “I have talked to the players and told them they will only get their money if they qualify for the World Cup.

“That is fair, and the players are okay about it. But what we have to do now is make a special offer – more than we have in the past.”
