McEvoy still out in front

05/12/2003 - 10:03:04
European Tour rookie Richard McEvoy shot another accomplished if occasionally fortunate round to retain his overnight lead at the Omega Hong Kong Open and set the half-way mark at 10 under par.

But defending champion Fredrik Jacobson is refusing to relinquish his title without a fight and finished as McEvoy’s closest challenger on seven under par after shooting a 65.

After McEvoy followed yesterday’s course record-equalling 62 with a “solid” 68, Jacobson’s effort was enough to eat into the 24-year-old’s lead, which was narrowed to three shots.

Sweden’s Henrik Nystrom led the chasing pack for most of the day on five under par until Jacobson put together a late run.

With the pair’s compatriot Peter Gustaffson on the charge, five under par after 12 holes, the tournament is nicely poised heading into the weekend.
