GAA asked to open Croke Park to soccer

05/12/2003 - 08:46:43
The Chief Executive of the Football Association of Ireland, Fran Rooney, has made a plea for the GAA to allow soccer to be played at Croke Park.

Speaking in Frankfurt ahead of today’s World Cup qualifying draw for the 2006 tournament, Mr Rooney says it would be the biggest boost possible for Irish soccer if the GAA headquarters was opened up.

Croke Park has been the venue for a number of non-GAA sporting events ,including the Special Olympics and the International Rules series, but soccer has never been played there.

Delegates at annual congress have persistently rejected motions to allow soccer, or rugby, be played at the GAA’s spiritual home, and there is no guarantee that this most recent plea will not also fall on deaf ears.
