Coppola to work on television sci-fi drama

05/12/2003 - 15:32:05
Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola is venturing into weekly television with a science fiction drama called The 4400.

Coppola is the executive producer of the series, which picks up where most alien-abduction tales end and centres on the return of 4,400 missing people to Earth, reports Daily Variety.

The abductees are left with no memory of their otherwordly experiences. Each has been gone anywhere from a few months to several decades, but hasn’t aged a day.

Coppola’s producing partner, Rene Echevarria, describes the series as a mixture of The X-Files and Party Of Five and is two parts character drama, one part extraterrestrial.

“These are people dealing with traumatic changes precipitated by this cool sci-fi event,” he said. “And the whole thing is driven by mystery of what happened and why. The alien stuff is just a great launching pad for everything else that follows.”
