Tesco to face Competition Authority inquiry

05/12/2003 - 07:49:46
Supermarket giant Tesco faces the prospect of a Competition Authority investigation into claims that it told suppliers it would no longer buy goods from producers selling to German discount chains Aldi and Lidl.

Retailers group RGDATA has called on the Authority to investigate claims that a Tesco executive recently told vegetable producers that they should not supply Aldi or Lidl if they wanted to remain supplying Tesco.

The RGDATA group represents independent grocers and retailers, including the Spar Franchise.

Last year figures show that Tesco had approximately 24% of the Irish grocery market.

Aldi and Lidl have almost doubled their combined market share over the last year and look set to take a 5 % slice of the market between them in the near future.
