Our marriage is fine, insists Beckham

16/11/2003 - 21:05:25
Soccer star David Beckham tonight called on people to stop “making up silly stories” about his marriage.

The England captain insisted there were no problems between him and Victoria despite a new report they were in crisis.

A story in today’s Sunday Mirror said Victoria had told her husband that their marriage was over unless he quit Spain, where he plays for Real Madrid, and returned to Britain.

Beckham, speaking in Manchester, denied the report and said he was “fed up” having to repeat that the couple were happy in Madrid.

He said: “My wife is a very committed person to her husband and her children and people should start realising that and stop making up silly stories.

“I’m fed up on commenting on it. I shouldn’t have to keep coming out and saying it because my wife loves me, I love my wife, and there have never been any problems.

“People like to create these problems and if they want to keep saying it then so be it.”

Stories about the Beckhams’ marriage began after he was photographed in the early hours of the morning at several Madrid nightclubs with his Real team-mates.

Attention has been drawn to the fact that Victoria has been pursuing her own career as a pop star and has spent a lot of time away from their home in Spain.

It was claimed in today’s report that Victoria told Beckham: “It’s my turn now. It’s my way or the f***ing highway.”

But Beckham is refusing to back down and has told Victoria her place is with him and their children in the Spanish capital, the newspaper claimed.

A trial separation had even been discussed, it said.

After five days apart they were reunited on Monday, but began arguing within hours, it added, quoting an insider as saying the marriage is “at breaking point”.

A spokeswoman for the couple dismissed the story as “rubbish” and said the couple had their lawyer looking at it with a view to possible legal action.
