Man found dead in blazing market shed
Police were searching a disused cattle market today following the discovery of a man’s body in a burning shed.
Police described the death of the man in the centre of Limavady, Co Derry, last night as “suspicious” and sealed off the market.
The grim discovery was made when the fire service was called to the burning shed in the derelict market, which was sold for development by the local council last week.
The man’s name has not been released yet, but he is understood to come from the town.
SDLP local councillor Dessie Lowry said councillors had been meeting to discuss the sale of the old market when they were informed of the death.
“When news of this very serious crime came through, we thought it inappropriate in the circumstances to carry forward any further business,” said Mr Lowry.
He added: “A very serious crime has been committed here in Limavady town centre and we need the public to come forward with information.”
He said the shed had been used over the years “by people who abuse alcohol”.
