Adams and Trimble expected to meet today
Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble and Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams were today expected to hold another meeting as efforts to restore Northern Ireland’s Assembly continued.
The two leaders were due to hold their seventh meeting at Stormont later today, sources said.
Mr Adams and Mr Trimble met on Saturday. Former Sinn Féin Lord Mayor of Belfast Alex Maskey claimed afterwards that the atmosphere was good.
However, he expressed his party’s concern at the position adopted by the Ulster Unionists on Friday over British and Irish government plans for the peace process.
Mr Adams was also due to meet nationalist SDLP leader Mark Durkan later today.
Speculation has been mounting in recent days that Northern Ireland is poised to have an Assembly election before Christmas, possibly on November 13.
The IRA are facing demands for a statement declaring an end to all paramilitary activity.
But Stormont sources believe the organisation is more likely to announce a third act of weapons decommissioning in a bid to move the peace process forward.
A source said: “There are a lot of meetings going on this week but it remains to be seen if everything falls into place.”
