Sony unveils 'crossover' PS2

07/10/2003 - 16:14:47
Sony today unveiled its PSX, a beefed-up “crossover” PlayStation 2 video-game machine that also works as a DVD recorder, TV tuner, digital photo album and music player.

The offering from the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant underlines the intensifying competition in the industry to sell the idea of home digital entertainment that introduces computer functions from the office into the living room.

The PSX, about the size of the PlayStation 2, is set to go on sale in Japan late this year for €607 for a version with a 160-gigabyte hard disk drive that can record about 200 hours of digital video, and €762 for a 250 gigabyte model that records 325 hours.

The PSX, slated for release next year in the US and European markets, took centre stage at a major electronics show near Tokyo.
