BA resume flights to Kenya

03/07/2003 - 13:20:13
British Airways resumed its daily service to Kenya today, seven weeks after its flights to the East African nation were suspended because of fears of a terrorist attack.

The British government imposed a ban on commercial flights to Kenya on May 15 because of a “credible” terrorist threat in the country.

That was lifted on June 26 after security in Nairobi had improved.

“We are pleased that we are able to return to our normal flight schedule,” said Ian Petrie, BA’s Kenya manager.

Kenyan officials had complained the flight ban, as well as US and British travel advisories, harmed Kenya’s economy by scaring off tourists and investors.

Kenya has been the scene of two terrorist attacks – both blamed on al-Qaida - in the last five years and US and British intelligence has raised fears of another attack.
