Seaman set to sign for City
David Seaman is reportedly on the verge of signing for Manchester City.
The 39-year-old, available on a free transfer from Arsenal, is expected to fill the void in Kevin Keegan’s squad caused by the retirement of Peter Schmeichel.
Keegan was linked with a move for West Ham’s David James but appears to have decided Seaman is the man after all.
The pair have a long-standing working relationship from their days as goalkeeper and coach of England.
Seaman still has hopes to continue an international career which began in 1988 when he was playing for Queens Park Rangers.
But he was fooled by Ronaldinho’s telling free-kick goal in England’s World Cup finals defeat by Brazil last summer and looks out of the reckoning to continue under Sven-Goran Eriksson after being left out of the last three international squads.
The opportunity to return as the number one goalkeeper on a two-year deal with a Premiership club should nonetheless give him a chance of impressing enough to revive his international ambitions.
The prospect of playing for City has become more enticing too following Monday’s announcement that they will play in the UEFA Cup next season thanks to their qualification via the ‘fair play’ league.
Seaman’s Arsenal career finished on a high when the Gunners beat Southampton in the FA Cup final in Cardiff last month.
