Houllier defends reckless Gerrard
Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has refused to criticise midfielder Steven Gerrard for his last-minute red card for a reckless lunge at Graeme Le Saux in stoppage time during the Reds 2-1 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
“To be honest, I wish I had a couple more players like him,” said Houllier.
England ace Gerrard was dismissed for the fourth time in his career having already been booked for fouling Gianfranco Zola five minutes earlier but Houllier said: “He was our driving force in midfield.
“I think what he did came out of pure frustration but all teams need somebody like him, like Roy Keane, like Patrick Vieira, and sometimes those players get into confrontation and get sent off. Steven is a forceful English midfielder. So what do you want?”
Gerrard, who has already served a three-match ban this season after being caught on camera recklessly tackling Everton’s Gary Naysmith during the Merseyside derby in December, will start next term with a one-match suspension.
