Labour worried about homeless figures

The Labour Party is calling for an independent audit of Government figures on housing and homelessness.

The Simon Community says the number of people sleeping rough in Dublin more than doubled last year.

The official Government total is put at 4,000 - over 1,100 of whom are children.

But Labour's Housing spokesman Eamon Gilmore expressed his fear today that the delay in releasing the figures means the numbers sleeping in Dublin's streets could be much higher than the official tally.
