SFA comes out against hypermarkets
12/05/2003 - 18:16:36Small businesses are warning that any move to allow hypermarkets into Ireland would be bad for both consumers and Irish traders.
The Small Firms Association says that while inflation needs to be tackled, the food sector is the wrong place to start.
SFA President Pat Delaney said tonight that abolishing limitations on the size of supermarkets would result in price wars in order to squeeze out small shopkeepers.
He added: "Competition in the food sector is already fierce, and is not contributing to current inflation rates. Also, claims by farmers of high mark-up on meat and dairy products have to be put in context."
