Safety Council defend gardai's driving campaign
Three men have died on Irish roads this weekend despite a major garda operation to clampdown on dangerous driving.
The victims are a 24-year-old motorist who was killed in a single car collision in Wexford last night and two motorcyclists who died in separate collisions with cars yesterday in Dublin.
Their deaths bring to eight the number of people killed on Irish roads in the past four days.
However, despite the fatalities the National Safety Council is insisting that the gardai's current safe driving campaign is working.
Chairman of the Council, Eddie Shaw says that road safety is about personal responsibility.
"Clampdowns absolutely work, we've already proven that. Penalty points work, but all the time we repeat, road safety is about personal responsibility. On a weekend like this where the weather is poor, visibility is poor, roads are wet...the thing to do is to slow down, take care, drive with your lights on, don't drink and drive and always wear a safety belt."
