Report claims major collusion with loyalists in the North

04/05/2003 - 08:49:56
It is reported that a Police Ombudsman Inquiry in the North has found that one senior loyalist carried out 13 murders in the North while working as an informer for the Special Branch.

The News of the World newspaper claims that the details of the case may never be fully disclosed because of budgetary restrictions on the Office of the Police Ombudsman.

The News of the World's Northern correspondent, Martin Breen, says the families of the victims are now looking for answers.

"They want to know, are these 13 murders just the tip of the iceberg, could we be talking about many more?

"I think also the Northern Ireland office will come under increased pressure to provide the funding now and I'm sure people will be saying that this could be bigger than the Steven's Inquiry because (of) allegations that the police were involved with an informer who seemed to be allowed to carry out murders during the peace process."
