SDLP call for British anthem axe

The SDLP has called on Northern football authorities to stop playing the British national anthem ahead of international games in order to attract more Catholic supporters.

At present, just a tiny minority of the Northern Ireland football supporters are Catholic.

At a recent match, sections of the crowd sang sectarian songs for the entire 90 minutes.

SDLP spokesman John Dallat said: "Here in Northern Ireland, all sporting organisations need to look seriously at the issues which allow bigots to have a field day and prevent ordinary, decent people like myself from attending these events."
