SDLP call for British anthem axe
27/03/2003 - 11:50:57The SDLP has called on Northern football authorities to stop playing the British national anthem ahead of international games in order to attract more Catholic supporters.
At present, just a tiny minority of the Northern Ireland football supporters are Catholic.
At a recent match, sections of the crowd sang sectarian songs for the entire 90 minutes.
SDLP spokesman John Dallat said: "Here in Northern Ireland, all sporting organisations need to look seriously at the issues which allow bigots to have a field day and prevent ordinary, decent people like myself from attending these events."
