The Government has announced plans to extend the national breast cancer screening programme.

The BreastCheck scheme will be extended to hospitals in Galway and Cork at an estimated cost of €27m.

Around 130,000 women between the ages of 50 and 64 will be eligible for screening at the new units, which are designed to serve the west and south of the country.

The BreastCheck scheme began in March 2000 in the eastern, north-eastern and midlands areas.

By the end of December last year, 83,000 women had availed of the free screening service.
