'Ghost' medical cards haunt health boards

The chief executives of Ireland's 11 health boards are due before the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee today to explain the phenomenon of "ghost" medical cards.

The issuing of such cards to people who have either died or left the relevant area is believed to have cost the Exchequer €20m.

An estimated 30,000 ,ghost," medical cards have been issued by the health boards.
