World Cup: Scotland rethink league line-up

11/09/2001 - 07:44:09
Scotland’s recent results in their World Cup qualifying games means the Scottish Premier League are set to discuss making changes to the league programme.

November 10 is set aside for World Cup play-offs but, as it looks highly unlikely that Craig Brown’s men will secure second spot in Group Six, that date could now accommodate fixtures for January 30 instead in a bid to ease congestion.

SPL director of football administration and finance Ian Blair said: ‘‘Originally we accommodated this date because Scotland, not to mention Sweden and Holland, looked as if they might be involved in the play-offs.

‘‘But Sweden are through automatically, Holland are out and, unfortunately, it looks as though Scotland will follow suit.

‘‘Obviously we’d be delighted if we had to keep this date free and we’ll know after Scotland’s game against Latvia, but we’ll be discussing a possible switch with the SPL board, as well as the SFA, in the next couple of weeks.’’
