Celtic League: Cardiff win over Edinburgh
Cardiff 32 Edinburgh 24
A Celtic League match marred by serious injuries to Cardiff’s Ryan
Powell and Edinburgh’s Richard Metcalfe was settled in the Welshmen’s
favour by a hat-trick of tries from giant Kiwi wing Craig Hudson.
Scrum-half Powell and lock Metcalfe tipped for a place in the Scotland
line up to face Ireland on Saturday week were both carried off with
suspected broken legs.
In a first half dominated by the boot of the respective outside-halves
the hosts’ Nicky Robinson and his opposite number Gordon Ross - Cardiff
came up with two superb tries.
A long pass by centre Matt Allen enabled full-back Rhys Williams to send
Hudson over for his fourth touchdown in five games.
Then Williams accelerated through a gap on the half-way line, raced
around two defenders and handed on to rugby league returnee Anthony
Sullivan, who trotted in to mark his reappearance in Cardiff colours.
The Scots capitalised on a defensive mix-up early in the second half to
grab a try by Chris Paterson. The full-back was hurt in scoring but was
at least able to leave under his own steam.
Flanker Graham Dall darted over from a scrum, and Ross’ conversion put
Edinburgh into the lead.
But 6ft 6in Hudson battered his way through a succession of tacklers in
a 60-yard dash to the corner and the big man charged over again in the
closing seconds to wrap matters up.
