A Singapore man has been jailed for stabbing a teenager who killed his character in a computer game.

Daniel Tan Thiam Soon, 21, knifed a fellow player in the back after the 16-year-old stabbed his character to death in the game.

District Judge Rahim Jalil has sentenced Tan to six years in prison and six strokes of the cane.

Unemployed Tan was playing Counterstrike in a computer gaming centre at Tampines.

A district court heard other players on different terminals can join in the game.

Players take on the roles of terrorists and anti-terrorists and fight over hostages.

In the middle of the game, Tan suddenly demanded to know who had 'killed' his character.

When 16-year-old Ng Qiyong confessed his character had carried out the virtual slaying, Tan stabbed the teen in the back following a scuffle.

Qiyong needed stitches to the wound.

Newspaper reports say Tan pleaded guilty to hurting his victim, as well as to consuming and possessing drugs.
