Title favourites Shelbourne got off to a winning start despite playing for an hour with ten men.

Defender Tony McCarhty was sent-off on 33 minutes after he appeared to elbow Ken Lundy.

But the reds got their noses in front ten minutes later when Garry Haylock fired home the only goal of the game after Robbie Forde failed to hold a Richie Baker free-kick.
