Palace prepares response to Sophie tapes

08/04/2001 - 12:31:48
Buckingham Palace was today preparing its response to new and damaging allegations contained in the controversial ‘‘Sophie tapes’’.

It is understood that royal aides, who overnight have studied transcripts of secretly recorded videotapes published in the News of the World, will issue a statement after 12.30pm.

Revelations by Murray Harkin, the business partner of Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, were caught on camera by an undercover reporter posing as a rich Arab sheikh.

Sophie was also filmed in the newspaper ‘‘sting’’ making outspoken and indiscreet comments about members of the Royal Family, leading politicians and current issues.

But it is Mr Harkin’s revelations and resulting allegations concerning his private life which have cast doubt over the Countess’s continued business association with him as a partner of their company, R-JH Public Relations.

Senior royal aides close to the Queen have almost certainly been in touch with Sophie and her husband Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex.

Palace officials declined to comment last night on the latest News of the World revelations and a spokeswoman was unable to confirm reports that Sophie had been to Windsor Castle to see the Queen.
