Gormley: Investments in flood-hit areas have 'paid off'

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has chaired a meeting at the National Emergency Task Force this afternoon to discuss the Government's response to the flooding crisis.
The meeting heard from Environment Minister John Gormley who visited the flooded areas in Cork, Ballinasloe and Ennis.
Mr Gormley said that investments already made in the emergency areas "have paid off".
Mr Cowen praised the work of emergency workers and volunteers, but warned that the bad forecast tonight could bring further flooding.
Schools in affected areas could be shut for a week as mains water is turned off for fear of contamination of water supplies.
Both Mr Gormley and the Taoiseach promised that the economic difficulties would not affect the Government's spending on the clean-up and rescue operations.
Mr Cowen said that further meetings would be held as the situation unfolded.
