The Green Party has called on the Government to extend the planned Dublin metro system into the south of the city.

The Government is planning to build the underground rail link between the city centre and Swords, via Dublin Airport.

A number of possible routes for the line are due to be unveiled later today.

However, Green Party TD Eamon Ryan is disappointed that the system will not serve southern suburbs.

"If we're going to build all those underground stations, if we're going to dig up a big chunk of Stephen's Green to put a station in, it makes sense to connect it into the southside rather than just have it connecting to the northside," he said.

"We should do the job properly rather than half a job."
