IMC expected to confirm several months of IRA inactivity

The body set up to monitor paramilitary ceasefires in the North is expected to confirm several months of IRA inactivity in a report later this week.

The Independent Monitoring Commission is expected to say that the IRA has remained inactive since announcing an end to its armed struggle in July.

The body is expected to report a total halt to both criminal and paramilitary activity by the IRA.

However, its report is not expected to spark any new political momentum as unionists have said they will await another assessment from the IMC next January before deciding whether to take the IRA at its word.
